ABOUT THE DESIGN

"The hills in the center and those that run along the middle represent my homeland, the Black Hills, 'Paha Sapa'. The Lakota Nation considers the black hills the center of the universe.  The dragonflies in the center represent the 'messengers' that take my prayers to the stars, our ancestors. The Buffalo tracks along each side of the center design represent the buffalo nation and serve as a reminder of the animal's role in sustaining our ancestors both physically and spiritually.

The three strips at the top and bottom of the design symbolize the traditional beadwork designs that I often incorporate into my beaded moccasins.

Growing up in the Black Hills and being a part of the powwow circle have taught me invaluable lessons about my Lakota culture and traditions. By connecting with the land, preserving traditional practices, and embracing my heritage, I have developed a deeper appreciation for my roots and a sense of responsibility to keep our culture alive for future generations through my beadwork." - Shawn

About the artist Shawn Zephier

Shawn Zephier, “Warrior who stands visible”, is from South Dakota and is a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe and the Onondaga/Iroquois Nation. Growing up in a family of traditional beaders, artists, and dancers, his love for beading sparked from a desire to craft his traditional regalia to dance at various powwows as a teen.

Shawn specializes in creating one-of-a-kind beaded moccasins featuring traditional symbols and unique, vibrant color-ways. Each pair of moccasins tells its own distinctive story. He is dedicated to preserving his cultural heritage and traditions through his beadwork, ensuring that these traditions remain alive for future generations.
