ABOUT THE DESIGN

GENERATIONS

    Weaving Culture, History, and Wisdom

In the intricate threads of Generations,  lies a profound narrative of cultural resilience and the timeless wisdom passed down through the ages. Inspired by the rich history of the Musqueam people, renowned for their mastery in weaving blankets that were not just utilitarian but sacred emblems of tradition, law and knowledge, this blanket embodies the essence of intergenerational storytelling.

The design of waves, borrowed from a 200 year old Salish blanket in a Finland museum, intertwines with Aleen’s arrows, Debra’s zigzags, and Isaiah’s butterflies to form a design of continuity, illustrating the seamless transmission of knowledge from one generation to the next.

"Generations" serves as a poignant reminder of the imperative to safeguard our cultural inheritance, ensuring that the teachings, stories, and values of our ancestors endure. Like the threads that bind it, this blanket weaves together the past, present, and future, forging a timeless connection between generations and preserving the essence of who we are. Through its warmth and symbolism, it beckons us to embrace our collective responsibility to nurture and protect our cultural designs for the generations yet to come.

About the artist Aleen Sparrow

Aleen Sparrow is an artist/model from Musqueam Territory, in 2019 she began learning traditional Salish weaving techniques from her mother Debra which has allowed her to reconnect to a lost artform and inspire the next generation.  Aleen honors her mothers  legacy while adding her own innovative flair, bridging the gap between past and present.

The Sparrow family, a trio of artistic visionaries coming from the Musqueam Nation, is a family that embodies the essence of cultural continuity, weaving a narrative of resilience, creativity, and ancestral wisdom. From Debra's pioneering efforts to Aleen's innovative interpretations and Isaiah's budding talents, each generation contributes to an ongoing tapestry of culture, identity, and community. The Sparrow family's art serves as a living testament to the enduring power of storytelling, ensuring that Musqueam history and traditions continue to resonate across time and space.   Through their shared journey, they inspire others to embrace the importance of passing on history through the generations, ensuring that the vibrant tapestry of Musqueam culture endures for generations to come.

A meaningful blanket to cherish for generations

"I absolutely love this blanket! It’s incredibly soft, warm and cozy, but it’s so much more than that. I love the story and meaning behind the Generations design, and I’m proud to support an Indigenous-owned Canadian company. This is one of those purchases that feels different. It’s not simply something I bought for my bed at the cottage. It’s a beautiful piece of art, a piece with meaning, and something I hope to cherish for many, many years — and hopefully something that will one day be cherished by generations after me."

Love my blanket
